The Ultimate Guide to Reykjavik’s Top Landmarks and Attractions

If you’ve booked a stay with us, you’ll no doubt be figuring out what to do while you’re in Reykjavik. No matter what your interests, the Icelandic capital delivers, so you won’t have to venture far to find something that appeals. Here’s what to do and see in our ultimate guide to Reykjavik’s top landmarks and attractions.

Iconic landmarks

Many of Reykjavik’s most iconic landmarks are located within walking distance of Exeter Hotel and you can book a sightseeing tour – on foot or by car – through our tour desk to see them . On the waterfront, the striking architecture and design of Harpa Concert Hall is worth checking out not only in the daytime but also during the evening when its glass panels are lit. Close by, the Sun Voyager sculpture evokes the days when explorers set off across the ocean in their dream boats. A short walk inland gets you to Hallgrimskirkja. This imposing church was built to resemble the basalt columns that are found all over the country. It’s worth riding to the top of its tower for the views over Reykjavik and beyond.

Quintessentially Icelandic attractions

You don’t have to travel beyond the city to appreciate the Icelandic countryside, though the staff on our tour desk will be happy to help if you do. FlyOver Iceland gives you the chance to experience the country’s extraordinary scenery on a motion ride, while at Lava Show, you’ll feel the heat as demonstrators recreate magma right in front of you. The walk-through ice cave at Perlan is so magnificent it’s hard to believe it’s artificial. There also, augmented reality brings the seabird cliff at Látrabjarg to life, while a breathtaking Northern Lights show means you get to see what the aurora looks like no matter what the weather.

Must-see museums

Reykjavik is blessed with loads of museums covering topics from punk music to penises. In the National Museum or at Árbær Open Air Museum, you can get acquainted with Iceland’s fascinating history and learn about lifestyles in the past. The Settlement Exhibition and Saga Museum fill out the picture, recounting some of the stories that shaped a nation. The ocean also features heavily in Reykjavik’s museum collections. At Whales of Iceland, learn about the many cetaceans that visit Iceland’s waters, while at the Maritime Museum, get a different perspective on the country’s relationship with the sea. Why not let us book you a Hop On, Hop Off bus ticket to make getting between them as straightforward as possible? Alternatively, we can arrange for you to each have a Reykjavik City Card which includes admission to many of the city’s museums.

Wildlife and nature

Iceland is one of the world’s great whale watching centres and you can book a trip that departs from Reykjavik’s Old Harbour, just a few hundred metres from the hotel. Year round, you can take a whale watching tour into Faxaflói Bay where you might see humpback whales, porpoises and dolphins. During the summer months, keep an eye out for puffins and other seabirds which are often seen on the offshore islands close to the shore. You might also be keen to catch the ferry to Videy Island, where art installations enhance the beautiful natural setting. Within the city centre, Tjörnin is a tranquil natural lake where you’ll often see birds such as eider ducks and whooper swans. Take a stroll past the many sculptures that have been installed along its shore, such as the curious but endearing Unknown Bureaucrat.

Geothermal baths

Geothermal activity has spawned a number of luxurious spas and baths in Iceland and some of the best are in or close to Reykjavik. For instance, we can book you a pass for Sky Lagoon which features a fabulous infinity edge pool and an indulgent seven-step ritual that is sure to make you feel pampered and relaxed. A short drive from the city you might prefer the rustic chic ambience of Hvammsvik Hot Springs, located on the edge of a gorgeous fjord. Alternatively, the iconic Blue Lagoon is conveniently positioned en route to the airport on the Reykjanes peninsula – ideal for a soak at the beginning or end of your stay.

As you can see, checking off Reykjavik’s numerous landmarks and attractions will keep you busy during your stay at Exeter Hotel. We’ll be happy to help you book tickets and arrange your sightseeing, as well as organise a private, chauffeur-driven city tour which can be customised to your interests and needs.
